Tonight, Babeville's Ninth Ward plays host to Malian guitarist, and son of Grammy award winning recording artist Ali Farka Toure, Vieux Farka Toure. Dubbed the "North African Jimi Hendrix" by critics, Vieux masterfully plays guitar, but also plays the African kora, a combination drum and string instrument, and several other traditional African instruments. He blends tradition from his roots in Mali, and inspiration from his father, with American blues and jazz. Toure has played alongside the likes of John Scofield, Dave Matthews, Derek Trucks, and his latest album The Secret, was produced by Soulive's Eric Krasno. Last October, Toure was asked to be part of the 25th anniversary of the "We Are the World" alongside artists like Michael Franti, G. Love and Special Sauce, and the Sierra Leone Refugee Allstars. He performed in front of an audience of a billion people during 2010's World Cup, and this past June his new album hit #1 on CMJ's world charts. His unique blending of world styles is a sign of where global music is going, and this is a very rare appearance in Buffalo, so make a point to get there. Tickets are only $13 in advance, and doors are 7pm.
